Size Matters
Perhaps the most obvious difference is the size. A campervan is based on a mid-sized panel van (such as a VW Transporter), whereas a motorhome will be larger and often based on a chassis of a longer van.
The main implication of this is of course where you store your vehicle overnight. A normal camper van is about the same length as a large estate car, and will therefore fit in most parking spaces and go on most driveways. A motorhome will be much larger, and therefore you will have to think about where it will be stored when not in use. Because of its size, you will most certainly find that you don’t use it as an everyday vehicle, as it simply just not as convenient.
The other consideration with regards to size, is that you’ll have to think carefully about where you are going. Not only will there be height restrictions on certain roads, and in car parks, but also if you are travelling down the small lanes in Cornwall you will find it very easy to get frustrated, or even worse stuck!
Luxury vs Convenience
The main reason that a motorhome is larger than a campervan is of course that you can fit more luxuries in. This will most likely include a toilet and/or a shower, and in most cases a fixed bed which you do not have to set up every night. Motorhomes will often have larger power capabilities, more cooking facilities, and perhaps even air-conditioning in the living area of the van.
Running Costs
Believe it or not, used motorhomes can sometimes be much cheaper to buy than used campervans, as they are generally not as desirable. This is because people much prefer the convenience of a campervan-sized vehicle, especially when hopping about between campsites, and visiting town centres and attractions.
A motorhome will also have higher running costs – not only in terms of fuel, but also maintenance, parts, repairs etc. You will also have to check your driving licence categories to endure you are eligible to drive certain motorhomes.
In summary, if you are planning on going on longer trips, staying in one place for longer, and you just can’t live without luxuries such as a toilet and shower, then a motorhome is for you. However, if you want the convenience of an everyday vehicle which can take you anywhere, and you are happy using facilities provided on campsites, then a campervan is almost certainly the best option for you. You will have more fun, you’ll use it more, and the whole ownership experience is far more straightforward.
